As
Director of the Office of Special Investigations (OSI), directed
and led our government's efforts to identify, investigate, and
bring to justice Nazi criminals living illegally in the United
States.
Some
noteworthy accomplishments include:
- Taking
the first depositions in the then Soviet Union, a landmark step
which paved the way for critical evidence gathering in the U.S.S.R.;
- The
successful prosecution of OSI's first cases, which established
the critical legal and procedural precedents;
- Effectuation
of the removal of dozens of Nazi criminals, including: the Romanian
fascist, Bishop Viorel Trifa; Andrija Artukovic, Minister of
the Interior of the Nazi puppet state of Croatia; Treblinka
death camp guard, Fedor Fedorenko; and Nazi rocket scientist,
Arthur Rudolph;
- Leading
the multinational (American-German-Israeli) effort to trace
the fate of Josef Mengele. Prepared the definitive report establishing
that Mengele had drowned in Brazil in 1976.
Led
the investigation of former U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim
and was responsible for Waldheim's inclusion on the "Watchlist"
of persons ineligible to enter the United States, due to his hidden
Nazi past. That ban remains in effect today.
